Girls basketball: Jefferson jaunts past Storm in debut

Chanhassen 's girls basketball team had its first lead early in its first-ever varsity girls basketball game Tuesday at Jefferson.

But the Jaguars turned it on in the second half to spoil the Storm's debut.

Freshman guard Lauren Shifflett led the Storm with 15 points, and junior captain Ashley Fedie added 13.

Junior captain Katelyn Kalkman netted eight points for Chanhassen , with Jessica Jerde adding a bucket and a free throw for three points.

Freshman guard Becca Smith had a basket and junior center Chelsea Buller chipped in a free throw for the Storm.

The Jaguars struggled in the early-going and Chanhassen took advantage for a 13-5 lead on a pair of three-pointers by Kalkman.

But the home team rallied to go up 17-15 and led 20-16 at halftime.

Jefferson sophomore guard Britney Scherber led all scorers with 18 points.

Chan (0-1) is back in action at 7:15 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 5 against Waconia for the Storm's first home game.

Some firsts:

- The first Storm points were scored on a layup by Fedie with 15:10 to go in the first half.

- Fedie made good on Chanhassen 's first free throw, sinking one of two with 12:42 left in the first half.

- Kalkman sank the Storm's first two-free-throw set and gave the team its first-ever lead at 5-4.

- Kalkman also drained the Storm's first three-pointer, and added another trey to put the Storm up 13-5.
